Unknown South Korean rookie Sunghoon Kang stunned the big names in the opening round of the Farmers Insurance Open, shooting an 8-under 64. Tiger went bogey- and dramaless and sits in the middle of the pack at three under. Check out some highlights
Kang, playing only his second US Tour event after coming through q-school, dominated the par-5s on his way to his first ever overnight lead in America.
"All the par-fives are reachable so I tried to keep to the fairways and it worked really well.
"I made two birdies and one eagle on the par-fives. I played very well."
Woods, on the other hand, uncharacteristically didn't take manage to gain a single shot on the par-5s, parring them all.
"I'm happy with the way I played, absolutely," Woods said. "I could have been a lot better if I took care of the par 5s a little bit more, but obviously, I didn't do that."
Tiger is five shots off the lead, but it is still very early days.
Phil Mickelson is also there and there abouts after an opening round 5-under 67, matched by non other than the Moles favourite slugger, John Daly.
"This place means a lot to me," Daly said. "The top golfers play here every year. That says something."
Tiger is looking for a strong performance this weekend to get his career back on track after dropping down to third in the world rankings. The crowd at the Farmer's Insurance Open were very welcoming of Woods, with, "Welcome back to Torrey," a very common utterance from the gallery in the former world No 1s direction.
