The field for the Players Championship is already looking a lot smaller and the cut hasn’t even happened yet, as five players withdrew in the first round because of injury.

American DA Points didn’t even manage a single shot before he withdrew, citing a back injury, while Hunter Haas pulled out after just three holes also complaining about pain in his back.

British Simon Dyson was the third of the five to blame a bad back for his withdrawal, but the Englishman managed to complete a disappointing opening round 4-over 76 before he decided to call it a day.

Paul Casey withdrew with a shoulder injury after reaching the turn on six-over par, while Argentine Angel Cabrera, the former US Open and Masters champion, cited personal reasons for his early departure, organisers said.

Cabrera found the water three times on the ‘island green’ par-three 17th hole where he shot a nine to complete his round on six-over.

I think anyone who cards a nine on a par 3 would withdraw for ‘personal reasons’ – aka Severe emotional complications.
