Golf legend Fred Couples has had to withdraw from The Players Championship this week because of illness.
The Champions Tour star has won The Players Championship twice in his career and makes a habit of competing well on the regular PGA Tour whenever he plays a tournament despite his age.
The 52-year-old last lifted the Players trophy in 1996 and is eligible to play this year because he won the Senior Players Championship. He will not be replaced in the 144-man field because his place was an addition to the event.
The Players Championship, commonly referred to as the unofficial fifth Major, begins on Thursday at TPC Sawgrass, with K.J. Choi as the defending champion.
Others who have withdrawn from this year’s tournament are Masters champion Bubba Watson, who wants to spend time with his wife and young son, while Dustin Johnson and Anthony Kim are not playing because of injuries.
