To hell with the global recession. If you have some spare cash lying about and fancy a trip of a lifetime, then you need to check this out.
It has to rate as one of the most amazing golf experiences in South Africa, if not the world, and the Ed and his Deputy were lucky enough to be invited on this trip to Pinnacle Point where, for just a day, they lived the lives of the rich and famous. (The Mole is officially jealous!) Here's what they had to say about it...
"We left from Cape Town International Airport, taking the Pinnacle Point chopper (filled with journo types from the country’s golfing mags) all the way up to Mossel Bay in just over an hour. Another passenger was Louis Oosthuizen, fresh from the Masters, who made us fly past his folks’ house in Albertinia so that he could see it from above!
"As we approached the course, Malcolm the pilot veered suddenly to the right and we chased the coastline at breakneck speed only metres above the water. As we got to Pinnacle, Malcolm got the chopper to suck straight into the air and next thing we knew we were perched high above the Pinnacle Point clubhouse, looking down on the most dramatic course in the country.
"For those who have not yet heard about Pinnacle Point, this course is built on the clifftops of Mossel Bay, on the South African east coast. It’s rated in the top three courses in the country, has been recognised as one of Compleat Golfer’s 5-Star Experience courses and was rated as one of the top 10 best new courses in the world. Spectacular only just begins to describe it.
"After a typical Pinnacle Point lunch of steak rolls, we decided to put Louis to the test on the golf course. OK, he was playing from the club tees, but 3 under is still a mighty fine effort in a moderate wind – even for a world top-50 player.
The course is looking as good as ever, with only the reconstruction of the 9th green a blemish on the aesthetics.
"After the round, we headed up to the Platinum Lounge - the most exclusive of venues reserved only for the most elite of Pinnacle members. A fine dinner and a few games of lie-dice later, the Ed and I were just about well enough oiled to take on the casino, so we shuttled up the road to hit the tables and discuss the day’s events over a quiet whiskey.
"The following morning we held onto our stomachs as we choppered our way back into Cape Town – all in time for a day at the office.
"Could this be the finest golf trip in South Africa? We reckon you would struggle to top it."
Here’s what it will cost you:
Day trip – seven golfers plus pilot fly to Pinnacle Point from Cape Town, play golf and return. R31 000.
Overnight trip – seven golfers plus pilot fly to Pinnacle Point from Cape Town, play golf, stay overnight, play golf again and return. R40 000.
