America takes the Cup!

It’s not the outcome The Mole had in mind, but the underdogs have done it and walked away with the Ryder Cup.

Requiring anything greater than 14 points to win the Cup, the Americans already had an advantage by leading nine points to seven before the start of Sunday’s singles matchplay. Anthony Kim secured America’s first point of the day by crushing the out-of-form Segio Garcia 5&4.

Once Kenny Perry and Boo Weekly had won their games it was just a matter of time till the Europeans succumbed to a pumped-up US side. JB Holmes sunk the final nail in the coffin by beating Soren Hansen. This required Furyk to halve one of the remaining two holes in his match against a disappointing Miguel Ángel Jiménez to secure the Cup for America; he did this on the 17th green...

The tournament certainly lived up to all expectations and hopefully it will be as closely contested in 2010 at the Celtic Manor Resort... preferably with a different outcome though!
