The Gary Player Country Club is not the easiest course at the best of times, so any attempt at making the course easier for the 2009 Nedbank Golf Challenge field would be a rather large challenge. The Mole, having just played in the Final Round at GPCC, arguably South Africa’s best golf day experience, has it under good authority that the rough this year won’t be as harsh as in previous years.
The set up at the GPCC has become rather predictable over the years and perhaps 2009 is year to mix things up a bit? Making the first cut of rough fairer certainly should make for some interesting scoring come 6 December. And how about forward tees on 18 Mr. Bruyns? Imagine McIlroy, taking his driver and blasting it over the corner of the lake, needing eagle to win on the last hole – why not make the 18th high risk-and-reward?
We’re unlikely to see a runaway winner this year (the Mole is feeling confident) and with a new breed of talented youngsters on show at Sun City, the level of competition should be worth the two-hour drive to South Africa’s number one course. If the Final Round was anything to go by, Gary Player Country Club will be in its best condition ever!
