The Mole is a little disappointed to report that Lee Westwood has won the Portugal Masters. Sure, it’s great for him, but spare a thought for Retief Goosen who held a one-shot lead going into today’s round...
The victory enabled Westwood to end a two-year drought, some 26 top-10 finishes, missing out on two playoffs on the Majors front and three playoff defeats. The victory not only adds €500 000 to his bank balance, but also leaps him into the lead in the Race to Dubai. Not to mention making it back into the OWGR top five!
An elated Westwood said afterwards, "You always slightly doubt yourself in the back of your mind and to be number one again feels great. It's been nearly 10 years since I won it. I'm also delighted about the world rankings. I always have a good look at that and it's a reflection of my consistency. But winning is definitely a habit and I got out of the habit. Hopefully now I have won again I can win more."
