In the wake of an extraordinary Open Championship, the Mole received a heart-broken letter from the editor of Compleat Golfer who had a few choice words for the golfing gods.
The Mole is fully aware of his dark, cynical sense of humour (he’s already penning pieces about the ‘Super-senior’ PGA Tour where death benefits and funeral funds for members are even more impressive than Tim Finchem’s PGA pension plan). But although the Mole is gutted for Tom Watson, he couldn’t help but think that it may have been a good thing for golf that Tom didn’t win because it would have made golf look a bit silly if a pensioner can win a Major. But before the Mole gets completely carried away with the idea of a crocked bunch of 60-somethings dominating the world’s fairways, given his connections in high places, he first has to post this letter from the esteemed ed… Dear golfing gods Three cups of coffee, a fresh herb muffin and the news that England gave the Aussies a klap today at Lords – and I’m still bummed. It’s all good and well when you decide to play silly buggers with some youngster like Sergio Garcia, but to take a living legend’s 59-year-old soul and smear it across a links like peanut butter is unforgiveable. You heartless bastards. And Stewart Cink? Where did that idea come from? How much Scotch did you people drink while you were scripting up this particular episode of our favourite reality TV programme, hey? Do you realise you denied us a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness something that would contend for the ‘greatest sporting achievement of all time’ – and in its stead, you delivered an Open winner who, although god-faring, a jolly nice family fellow and a very good golfer, will hardly go down in history as one of the game’s greats. Did you even notice that Westy played the best golf out there of anyone? Or that Ernie found a little something? Two years ago, when you played with the emotions of that young Spaniard, it was quite amusing I agree – and last year, although edgy, allowing Greg Norman to play in the final group was entertaining. This time, though, you went too far. First you blow that 8-iron over the back and then you leave a 10-footer for victory – to a man who's struggled from that distance for 30 years! All I can say is, good luck for next year at St Andrews as you try to come up with something even more spectacularly disappointing. How about Ernie, Retief, Thomas Aitken and Richard Sterne all tied for the lead after 72 holes, but you somehow find a way of getting them all DQ’d, leaving Anthony Kim 10 shots back in fifth place to become the default champion golfer of the year. Oh, yes, that would be brilliant. The worst part of all is I know that you know that even though I’m driven to drink by what you do each and every year when the Claret Jug is up for grabs, I’ll be glued to the telly again in 2010, watching every shot like a five-year-old mesmerised by the Teletubbies: and loving every moment of the championship that I still consider to be the greatest in all of golf. Yes, indeed, what a good thing that I love the Open Championship even more than I hate you. Brandon – Editor, Compleat Golfer

POOR CLUB CHOICE
I agree 100* with Vinesh regarding Toms putting instead of chipping from behind the 72nd. I was right behind his ball (in the grandstand however) and my personal choice, before Tom got anywhere near the ball was a "definite chip" there was no question in my mind. The lie was fluffy, the ball up, and putting through the rough not too good an idea!I sincerely believe that most golfers of skill(and some not so skillful like myself) would have done likewise and got up and down most of the time.Maybe pressure told and Tom thought this was the percentage shot!We all learn from an incorrect decision although mostly in retrospect.Tom really deserved to win though!

Next Time
Well done old TW. Show them next year. If Tom can show us what can be done at that age I can't wait to get there

A spectacular achievement indeed
Watson might not have won, but he lead The Open for al four rounds, teed off in the final fourball, and had the final putt on the 18th for a win. Surely that is no lucky feat. On the other side, it is only on a course like Turnberry were he could do this, where the other players tee off with 5-irons to where his 3wood/hybrid can roll the same distance. Just goes to show how "real golf" is meant to be played - not the "rip it" from the tee target golf that we see nowadays. Also shows that Ernie is a really good player since he always does well on links courses. Tiger and the rest doesn't know wind, deep rough and slopy greens.

Beaten by fatigue
If the play off was over 18 holes on Monday like they do in America Tom would have beaten Cink. Tom simply had no energy left for a play off.

Cink Sinks Tom's dream
Words can't describe what I felt when I saw Watson's last 3 shots in regulation on the 18th. His face said it all . He was a beaten man there and then. But what an achievement...well done TW...(Tiger? Tiger who? Good to see he is after all just human after all.)

poor club choice
TOM WATSON WOULD HAVE WON THE OPEN HAD HE NOT PUTTED FROM THE FRINGE ON THE 18TH.A SIMPLE CHIP WITH A WEDGE WOULD HAVE GOT HIM CLOSE TO THE HOLE. A POOR CLUB CHOICE FOR SUCH AN EXPERIENCED PLAYER - HE WAS BRILLIANT UNTIL THEN

Play the ball as it lies
Wouldn't it have been great to see "old Tom" pull it of, it did not happen what a shame. Cink a gentleman of the game imagine what he must have felt like being the one that had to do the damage. I am pretty sure that if he would have known that this would happen he would have missed his 18th birdie put, but he played the game. I feel sorry for what happened to Tom, but I can also feel the hurt that Cink must have been going through.

Still an unbeatable record
Hold it, guys: Tom did not win, but surely to reach the play-off for the Open at the age of 59 is something equally spectacular?

damm
I was so hoping Watson would win it, seriously the only record that Tiger would never have been able to break and that thought made my heart happy

Golden Oldies
Happy for Cink, BUT it would been such a great event if Old Man Tom was able to pull off the victory. Watson proves that there is still life in the older players, just like Greg Norman did last year.

Message to the golfing Gods
I couldn't agree more, though if they step up to the plate again in 2010 we may all need some serious post Claret Jug presentation counselling!

This Game
That is why we hate and love this bloody game. So cruel, so unfair, so unpredicatble, so honest - so very much real life!
