Fourteen times Tiger Woods has started the final round of a Major leading – and 14 times he has taken home the trophy. Yet this weekend Tiger could not sustain his remarkable streak and crumbled with a final-round 75, allowing YE Yang to win his first Major. The Mole’s certainly not Tiger’s biggest fan, but he could not help feel disappointed. Did the wrong guy win?
It was just another one of those faultless days out on the course for Tiger Woods. He played in his usual style – popping in birdies when they counted the most and never looking too perturbed by what was going on around him.
After the first round of the PGA Championship, there wasn’t a single South African anywhere near the top 10 on the leaderboard. But, somehow they managed to get their acts together in the second round yesterday, jumping from the bottom half, right up to the top half!
There were a couple of big names to miss the cut, which is expected. This time there aren’t too many of them, which is a great sign if you plan on watching Tiger win his ninth Major this weekend.
So John Daly has withdrawn from the PGA after shooting a 78. Supposedly back pain is the reason for him dropping out of the Major, but on Twitter Daly is now blaming a three-year-old rib injury.
The Mole wasn’t at all surprised to watch Tiger ease his way to the top of the leaderboard during the opening round of the PGA Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club. Five birdies and no dropped shots ensured that Tiger took top spot at five under; just one shot ahead of playing partner, Padraig Harrington.
Bookies have Tiger at 2/1 favourite to win this week’s PGA Championship. Given his recent run of form, you’d be crazy to back anyone else – or would you? The Mole has other ideas…
You’d expect Monty to be a bit biased, but the Scot has predicted that four or five Europeans will finish in the top 10 in the PGA – however, as the 214th-ranked golfer in the world, the Mole is certain that the Ryder Cup captain won’t be one of them.
