Check out the answers to the Rules of Golf Quiz from page 45 of the May issue. Let us know if you got all the answers right?

HOLE 1 177 YDS, PAR 3

Fabien hits his 6-iron towards the green, but his caddie, Ruud, then points out that his ball was ahead of the tee markers. He tees another ball, within the teeing ground, and hits it into a greenside water hazard. His ball lies in a playable position within the hazard and before attempting a stroke Fabien removes a rule book and an abandoned ball that were lying in the hazard near his ball. Fabien then splashes out nicely to three feet. After repairing a spike mark which is on his line of putt he confidently holes out.

Answer 7: Fabien incurs a two stroke penalty for playing from outside the teeing ground (Rule 11-4b). The stroke played is cancelled. 2 stroke penalty. He then plays from the correct place. 1 stroke. No penalty for removing rule book and abandoned ball as these are movable obstructions and Rule 24-1 applies. He plays out of hazard. 1 stroke. Penalty for repairing spike mark 2 stroke penalty.Holes putt. 1 stroke

HOLE 2 422 YDS, PAR 4

Fabien asks his fellow competitor, Thierry, how far the fairway bunker is from the tee and subsequently selects his driver for his tee shot at this demanding par four hole. Unfortunately, he strikes his ball poorly and fails to clear the fairway bunker. Upon entering the hazard, Fabien removes a pine cone lying near his ball. Choosing a 5-iron, a flat swing sees Fabien hook his ball towards the boundary of the course. Upon reaching his ball, it becomes apparent that it is just touching the out of bounds line painted by the Rules Officials. However, as the majority of his ball is lying on the course, Fabien deems that it is in play and a deft pitch on the green leaving him with a tricky downhill putt to the hole. Eager to make another par, Fabien strikes his ball without much preparation and his ball strikes the unattended flagstick and falls into the hole.

Answer: 7: No penalty for asking about the position of bunker. Plays his drive -1 stroke. Removes pine cone from bunker. Incurs a two stroke penalty for removing a loose impediment in a hazard. Rule 23-1. 2 stroke penalty. Plays from bunker - 1 stroke. Ball is in bounds as part of it lies inside the white line. Pitch to green - 1 stroke. Putts out - 1 stroke. Balls strikes unattended flagstick. 2 stroke penalty.

HOLE 3 310 YDS, PAR 4

With the chance to go below par, Fabien decides to take on the water at this hole and go for the green with his driver. He creates an irregularity of surface (with some nearby sand) on which he tees his ball. After a deep breath he swings hard and sends his ball off with the required high fade towards the green. To the cheers of the crowd, his ball lands and comes to rest on the putting green, thirty feet from the hole. As Fabien walks onto the green, to his horror, a seagull picks up his ball and flies away with it, dropping the ball into the greenside water hazard. Substituting another ball, Fabien allows his caddie, Ruud, to replace the ball at the spot from which it was moved. Shaken he hits a poor putt which comes to rest just short. Unsure as to whose turn it is to play, Fabien decides to measure using the flagstick. Accidentally, he moves his ball in the process. Frustrated with his subsequent penalty he replaces his ball and rams his putt home for a par.

Answer: 5. No penalty for creating an irregularity of surface on the teeing ground. Drives to the green - 1 stroke. Seagull is outside agency and he may replace ball or substituted ball without penalty. The player or his partner must place the ball. Incurs a two stroke penalty for allowing his caddie to place it (Rule 20-3). 2 stroke penalty.Hits a poor putt - 1 stroke. No penalty for moving the ball in the process of measuring (Rule 18-6). Holes putt - 1 stroke.

HOLE 4 362 YDS, PAR 4

Fabien tees up his ball and proceeds to sky his tee shot straight up in the air coming to rest on the fairway approximately 100 yards off the tee. On reaching his ball he notices that his ball is plugged, and confident of the ruling he marks, lifts and cleans his ball. He then drops the ball as near as possible to the spot where the ball was plugged (not nearer the hole) and proceeds to hit a poor second shot into a greenside bunker. Annoyed at the poor approach shot, Fabien makes his way to the bunker to find that his ball is not visible. Convinced that his ball is buried in sand, he takes out his wedge and proceeds to rake the sand at which point his ball surfaces and rolls to the bottom of the bunker. Annoyed that he has caused the ball to move, he replaces and re-covers the ball with sand so that only part of the ball is visible and plays a good explosion shot coming to rest on the fringe of the green. On reading the line of his putt, Justin notices that there is some sand on his line located on the fringe of the green which he sweeps away with his hand. He then putts up to the side of the hole and holes out.

Answer: 7. Skies tee shot - 1 stroke. He is allowed free drop for embedded ball on closely mown area and has proceeded correctly. Hits shot into bunker - 1 stoke. No penalty for moving ball while searching for it in a hazard (18-2). Hits out bunker - 1 stroke. Two stroke penalty for sweeping away sand off the green. Sand is a loose impediment only on the green. 2 stroke penalty. Takes two putts to hole out - 2 strokes.

HOLE 5 208 YDS, PAR 3

Keen to make amends after the last hole, Fabien changes his ball and confirms to his fellow competitors that he now playing a Nike 1 with three red dots. He selects a four iron and hits a glorious approach shot which unfortunately takes one bounce and goes over the back of the green into deep rough. After a brief search (two minutes) Fabien finds a ball he believes to be his and hacks it onto the green to about 20 feet of the hole. As he marks his ball, he notices that the ball he has played was in fact a Titliest 3 with red dots and not his Nike. Fabien then goes back to resume the search for his original ball and after another two minutes of searching he finds a ball he believes to be his. Without marking the ball he rotates to check it is his and is relieved to find that this ball is his Nike 1. Fabien then hacks the ball out of the rough to approximately 15 feet of the hole. Whilst reading his putt, he notices that he now has an old hole plug on his line of putt which is slightly raised. Not happy that he has to putt over the old hole he taps it down to make it level. Fabien then proceeds to make a good stroke and holes the putt.

Answer: 6.No penalty for changing ball in this way. Hits four iron - 1 stroke. Plays wrong ball. 2 stroke penalty. Finds original ball within five minute period no penalty. He incurs a one stroke penalty for touching ball without marking it ( Rule 12-2). 1 stroke penalty. Hacks ball out onto green - 1 stroke. No penalty for tapping down old hole plug (Rule 16-1).Holes putt.1 stroke.

Readability
I really do enjoy your site but find it very hard to read the print - yellow on black. As such I loose interest as it is a struggle and pain to decifer. A simple black type on white would do. Thanks
