My ball has landed in a divot - what now?

Local rules at many clubs allow placing or 'preferred lies' particularly in the rainy season. Rules guru and R&A official Ivano Ficalbi explains the correct procedure for placing your ball to avoid being penalised.

Rules education
I believe it will be very educational and "intimidating" for frequent transgressors if Golf Clubs would have Rule Video Clips like these playing in a loop on a big screen at the Pro shops. Amateurs make up their own rules too easily and such conflict can spoil a good game.

Placing - "Through the Green'??
Mini- Ruler I don't think placing "through the green" is correct i.e. in the rough!! Placing surely would only apply on the fairway and on going into a divot you may improve your lie within the specified distance whether it be 300mm,a handspan or 1 club length when really necessary.I agree that its very unfair to have your ball land in a divot when there are no improved lies and having to play it - as you say it should be GUR because the green keeper has not repaired it yet!

Actually
A Local Rule is not authorized by the R&A & USGA to allow a free drop out of a divot hole.

Interesting, can you be more specific about what's plain wrong? For what it's worth these rules clips are supposed to give you the basics, so perhaps you mean they're not comprehensive enough?

bad golf
These rules video clips are so badly done and so misleading one has to ask why you have bothered to do them. Some of the info is just plain wrong.

Actually...
...I don't know of any local rules that "allow placing when you find your ball in a divot" specifically. They generally have a local rule that allows placing through the green - balls in divots don't come into it. Even though, strictly speaking, a divot should be "ground under repair" and you should therefore get relief. Yet the rules writers don't seem to agree. I've never understood why a seemingly good shot that lands (or should land) on the fairway should then be penalised because it comes to rest in a divot.
