Jim Furyk was penalised the maximum four strokes for having 15 clubs in his bag during the third round of The Barclays. It was the simplest of mistakes by him and his caddy Mike Cowan (known as “Fluff”) which, in effect, ended up costing Furyk $131 250 (R1 023 750) – the difference between finishing T15 and T7.
It started out on the range where Furyk was trying out two different lob wedges, one with more bounce to help him deal with the grain in the runoff areas around the greens. He eventually decided to go with his normal wedge, but the one he was trying out ended up staying in the bag...
Furyk only realised on the 15th hole that the club was still in the bag and called the penalty on himself. Two strokes per hole, with a maximum of a two holes that you can be penalised on, four stokes in total.
"It was a chain of events that added up in a stupid mistake," Furyk said. "I assumed he (Cowan) knew I was going to play this 60 and he didn't know which way I was going to go. It's one of the simplest rules in golf. It's so easy.
"He (Cowan) was kicking himself. I said, ‘Hey, I don't want to hear it. Let's just play golf and we'll figure it out.'
"We've been through too much together for a long, long time. He's been on my bag for over 10 years. He does what he does. He shows up on time. He's a good person and he's a good caddie. The last thing I want anyone to do is blame it on Mike. The fact that we both made the error is what surprises me. That's the shocker. I can see one person being a bonehead for 30 minutes, but two people is disappointing."
Well said!
