A 59 and a Wie bit of luck

Michelle Wie has finally grown up

After a rather dull, predictable end to the NGC this weekend, thankfully there were some amazing qualifying stories to keep golf nuts interested.

One pro is on his way to qualifying for the US Tour with a magical 59 – the first player in eight years to achieve join the ‘break 60 club’. Michelle Wie finally proved that she belongs on the LPGA Tour and Ashleigh Simon has made SA proud by earning her tour card.

Golf does not get much more stressful than at Q-School where golfers fight it out to get that elusive tour card, but Harrison Frazar, winless after 300 US Tour starts, felt a very different type of pressure after he rolled in his seventh straight birdie on the 17th hole of the Nicklaus Tournament course at PGA West – he needed only par on the final hole to post a 59 and join the elite ‘break 60 club’. What followed was a perfect drive onto the fairway, a wedge to the green and two putts for him to become only the second player to shoot a 59 at Q-School. Frazar followed it up the next day with a 69 to increase his lead to five strokes with one round to go until he claims his tour card.

Meanwhile Wie, who is still a student at Stanford, surprised her critics by earning her LPGA Tour card, closing with a two-over-par 74 and a total of 12-under 348 to finish tied for seventh in the qualifying tournament. “It feels like a clean slate, a new beginning, and I finally feel like I really earned it,” she said. I have never exactly been a fan of Wie, but maybe she has finally accepted that there are no short cuts to success. Of course, she needed her LPGA Tour card now more than ever, as her sponsors’ exemption act was beginning to wear thin at age 19.

Also hard at work this weekend was local lass Ashleigh Simon who finished T17 in Q-School. In a qualifying tournament where one or two shots can make the difference between a year on tour or hacking away at it until next year (only the top 20 receive their cards), Ash held her nerve, closing with a final-round 68, the lowest score carded on the day.

bizarre points
You are right. Invitational events should not count to rankings. It is a mockery.

bizarre points...
Has anyone else picked up that Stenson, by winning an all invitational event with just 12 guys in the field, in the silly season, picked up enough world ranking points to vault from 12th to 7th on the world rankings? Is it just me, or does that make a bit of a mockery of the rankings?

NGC
Yaawn. What a bore. without Ernie, Tiger and Phil - what is the point of watching this dull event where the winner emerged on the 1st day?

Enough about Wie
Just in general - what's with all of the ink about Michelle Wie? I think a much better story is Stacy Lewis - who WON the Q-school and has had a very tough life. More human interest and more of an inspiration for kids with health issues everywhere. Wie will continue to be a spoiled kid, Stacy and others are the real story for the LPGA - lets see more of them.

More players for the NGC
I could not agree more. The 12 players are not all the best in the world currently. The reason the event has managed to pull crowds is not because of the players, it is due to companies that buy packages and entertain their clients at Sun City. It is the resort and free "holiday" that pack the stands. Put a full field of best players and include it as part of European tour. Because of the "Race to Dubai", players will support it. With the current financial crunch companies may cut sponsorship and "free holidays", the results will be dwindling spectators...guaranteed.Do something before it is late.

Stunner Stenson
Don't you think it time that the supporters of NGC see more than just 12 folk on the course- surely it's time to get a full field and make it part of the European tour. After 28 odd years something should change

Stenson Stunner
Hi, thanks for a fine update of what goes on in the golf world. After watching Stenson play superb golf on a most testing lay out...yes, probably predictable, possible boring, but let no one under estimate the severity of the GPCC in '08. It was penal. To win there these days does not necesarily take flamboyant golf, nor spectacular. Fairways and greens, that's what does it. Witness the last four winners, Furyk...twice, Immelman and Goosen! Not exactly the wildest lads off the tee, nor always the longest, just steady. That unfortunately is what organsers and/or designers get when they want to "protect" their courses. Is it time that we forget about that and just let the boys loose and let them shoot the lights out? Just asking. Still Hendrik played awesome golf, proven by the fact that he won by such a big margin! He stayed out of trouble, got the right bounces and dominated with the putter. A recipe for success. Perhaps a re-think about format? Twenty players: winner takes all...Two Mil and a $400 000 prize for best round of the day - EVERY DAY! Just asking?

Stu, dude...
that's a very brave statement! The way she hits the ball, she's got every chance of being a superstar - the only thing standing between her and a bunch of trophies is her head (and a dadd who doesn't seem to be able to leave her side)! And now, after failing so dismally to fulfil everyone's expectations, perhaps she'll take the pressure off herself.

Wie wie
I can't imagine that Michelle will make anything of her career... still, at least she's on tour because she can play, rather than because she made for good eye candy.
