Black Monday for golf?

Desperate times call for desperate measures!

After a week of worldwide economic crisis, it is hardly surprising that golf has become one of the latest casualties. The US Tour’s schedule for next year is certain to be hard hit as tournaments sponsored by banks and motor companies are threatened.

And as the weeks go by it seems less and less likely that Tiger will be back on tour any time before the end of next year, leaving the tour in a precarious position.

US Tour commissioner Tim Finchem has got to be more than a little worried… The Wachovia Championship, one of the tour’s premier events, had no sponsor after Wells Fargo’s $11.7 billion acquisition of Wachovia Corporation resulted in the cancellation of their contract with the US Tour. “Tickets were within five days of being printed when we stopped the presses,” tournament director Kym Hougham said.

But the good news is that the tournament will go ahead with Wells Fargo assuming sponsorship. “We know the tournament will happen,” Hougham said. “We'll still sell out the tournament, but it may be later than normal.”

So although golf might be off the hook in the short term – all of its tournaments have sponsorship deals until 2010, with some of the deals through 2012 – it's the long term that really concerns Finchem as several second-tier sponsors have began pulling out.

Six to eight of the presenting sponsors of the Sony Open have pulled out “some who had been with us for years,” tournament director Ray Stosik said. “We thought they would continue, but the economy forced them to make drastic changes.” The Arnold Palmer Invitational has also been hit, with one of the three presenting sponsors, who tournament director Scott Wellington declined to identify, has also pulled out of the event. “I firmly believe we'll come out of it,” Wellington said, “but we'll take a hit next year.”

The situation is even worse for LPGA Tour. Last week Thursday it was announced that ADT Security Services would not be renewing its contract with the LPGA, which has already lost four sponsors this year. The tour has also waved goodbye to the Fields Open in Hawaii and the Ginn Tribute in South Carolina, a sponsorship that leaned heavily on real estate. Ginn has consolidated its two LPGA events into one. SemGroup sponsored an event in Tulsa, but it filed for bankruptcy a few weeks ago. Safeway, which sponsored tournaments in Phoenix and Portland also consolidated and now has only the Portland event.

In short, it’s chaos out there, and without Tiger Woods to pull the crowds and the sponsors (it is rumoured that doctors have booked him off for no less than 20 months) 2009 looks to be a bleak year for golf in the US.

Handicap pros
Why complain about the pros. We have in the amateur ranks Cheats that go from one sponser day to other not handing in scores and organisers like Supersport, Volvo, Senior Amateur etc not interested if winners with these unbelievebale scores hand in the scores. It make you sick when the organisers are only interested to rake in our money. Please organisers start idetify these cheats and have them blaclisted

Hmm
I don't think Tiger is on any form of banned substance, he is just that good. Maybe his injury is just a lot worse than he is letting on...

I smell a rat...!
What's it with Tiger and his unbelievable sabbatical? Golf is a non-contact sport and I don't see how it can take 18+ months to come right. If you look at FREDERIC MICHALAK of the Sharks, he was back in 3 months and he looks just as good as ever.I think there is more to this story than Tiger's good doctors are telling.Just imagine the fall out of sponsors if the No. 1 golfer was banned for 2 to 3 years for a banned substance? A good investigative journalist good make a good story here by getting to the bottom of this one!!!

TV?
What is going to happen to TV? The PGA gets paid TV rights by he stations per event. Will TV stop covering golf as the TV stations won't be able to get advertisers?

Total Excess
Golf sponsorship has got out of hand, just like the financial markets. $10 million for V J to merely have to pitch up to play! Tiger, Ernie, in fact most of the big names, not merely multi- millionaires but billionaires. And tons of guys who have never won tournaments for years, still earing in excess of $1 million a year - for what? Golf, like most things in Western (American?) society has been over-promoted to the point of becoming ludricrous - like Hollywood - total excess. Hollywood thrives on escess, sport should not - it has traditional ethics.

Is Tiger guilty of doping?
I don't understnad how a knee injury can keep a golfer out of the game for 18 months and yet a professional rugby player can do the same and be out for no more than six months? Is Tiger not disguising a possible doping problem?

Over paid, below par performances
More and more professional players hit less 50% greens in regulatory...Are they woried about financial investments due to market turmoils? This is a worrying trend...no commitment..is golf heading downwards like boxing. Never say never..who still watches or even attends boxing matches. I do not know anyone who follows boxing..Is it still recognised as a sport? Maybe we should all be amateurs and enjoy ourselves.

Boring stuff for sponsors and the rest of us
Perhaps if the pros played more golf instead of wandering around trying to decide what they are doing, the game has become a joke. Watching these guys on TV is so boooorrrriiinnnnng.
