Strolling to another victory
comments: 0

Vijay Singh strolled in with an 8-under 63 to win the Deutsche Bank Championship (his second straight win and the 22nd since he turned 40!)

He out putting forever-bridesmaid Sergio Garcia, forcing Mike Weir into second and effectively wrapping up the FedEx Cup.

For the hardest working tour pro in golf, it’s appropriate that Labour Day in the US is good to Vijay Singh. In 2004, it was on this day that he won the Deutsche Bank tournament, overtook Tiger on the World Rankings, and set the scene for a year when he’d win a shattering $10 million and was voted Player of the Year. It was the start of a ding-dong battle with Tiger and by the time Woods won the Masters, the lead had swopped three times. If there’s any doubt who’s been the second best player in golf since Tiger came along, it must be Vijay Singh – after Tiger, he’s the only man to reach $50 million in PGA Tour career earnings. So, with his victory this year, again on Labour Day, could we be in store for the biggest upset in golf? Probably not, but it still makes for exciting viewing!

Singh fired a closing round 63 at the Deutche Bank, beating Mike Weir by five strokes and closing out a chasing pack that included Camilo Villegas, Ernie Els and Sergio Garcia all within three strokes of the lead. In a very ‘Tiger-like’ display, Vijay made the killer blow with a weapon that’s been a weakness for much of his career – the flatstick. Apparently Vijay’s convinced himself that he’s not just a good putter – he’s the best in the world!
