Du Toit wins PGA Club Pro Champs

No surprises there then, but it was not quite the triumphant procession expected at Gardener Ross for the final round of the 2008 Compleat Golfer PGA Club Pro Championships.

Despite a four-shot lead going into the final round, Royal Johannesburg & Kensington’s Michael du Toit was made to work hard for his victory by local pro and seasoned campaigner Kevin Stone, who made a fast start to his final round, with birdies on his opening two holes.

In the end, Du Toit did just enough and it was only a going-for-broke double bogey on the last by Stone that made the victory look comfortable. “I am very proud to win this event. Kevin played great golf today and it was only my putter that kept me in it over the front nine. I hit better shots on the final nine, so in the end I was quite comfortable,” said an elated Du Toit, who teaches out of Royal Johannesburg & Kensington and plays the Sunshine Tour part time.

The leading senior was Gavan Levenson, whose 224 total was good for a top-20 place overall and Crizelda van Niekerk was the leading woman pro in the field.
