Talk about a “damp squib”

It’s a bit of a disaster for those trying to sneak into the top 125 on the PGA Tour moneylist: the Viking Classic has been cancelled. And it’s the first time since 1991 that a PGA Tour event has been cancelled because of weather.

The Annandale Golf Club in Mississippi has really been suffering with drainage issues after two weeks of continuous downpours. It took about 50mm of rain on Friday night to really put the nail in the coffin for the event organisers. Some parts of the course were so bad that tournament officials would have had to shorten six of the seven par fours to par threes because the fairways were so waterlogged.

It’s going to make it a real toss-up for those players trying to retain their cards for next year as well those trying to get inside the top 125 so that they don’t have to play in Q-School.

The Tour has said that, because no rounds were played, the event will not be rescheduled and none of the purse will be paid out… Spare a thought for Chris Riley who has worked his way up to 126th spot on the moneylist by playing in the “Fall Finish”… Here’s hoping he doesn’t need a Disney miracle at the Children’s Miracle Network Classic, the last event on this year’s PGA Tour, which is scheduled for Orlando’s Disneyland next week.
