Retief Goosen and Ernie Els have been drawn to play together in the opening rounds of the US Open at the monstrous Bethpage Black next week. They will play alongside the very much in-form Phil Mickelson... The Mole wonders if you still remember golf’s so-called “Big Five”?
Those were the days... when Ernie and Retief were giants of the golf world and had recently added Majors to their names. Now, you have Ernie who still can’t sink a putt and is supposedly “close” to finding that amazing game that he has hidden in a cupboard somewhere (was it perhaps washed out to sea when his Herold’s Bay house flooded in a rather high spring tide a few years back?).
And Retief? Well, he is a US Open specialist but whether or not he can do it again remains to be seen. The Mole is not so sure.
The tale of twos: Ernie and Retief, the two South Africans playing together have two US Open titles each. Their playing partner, Phil Mickelson, has finished in the number-two spot, four times. Just a little tidbit for the 1st tee tomorrow morning...
