The Mole could possibly have one of the greatest golf-related jobs in the world, at least that is how he feels after today. TaylorMade’s superb R9 press preview to the official launch of the driver next Friday was truly something special.
Why, I hear you ask? Well first off the Mole was collected in one of Audi’s new Q5s, which were only launched last night, and driven in style (more speed than style actually, much to the Mole’s liking) to Steenberg Golf Estate, one of Cape Town’s finer golf clubs.
Lunch, which consisted of fillet and desserty type things (a favourite with Moles across the globe), was laid on, followed by a not-so-brief, in-depth talk by Brett Burgess, TaylorMade’s marketing guru, about the upcoming R9 driver, R9 fairways, the re-invented Rescue and the amazing Burner Irons. (These will all, of course, be available at all good golf shops on Friday 20 March.)
Then the fun began. The media headed out to the range, where the full range of clubs was available to be tested with TaylorMade’s TP Red golf balls (the exact same ones used at the range at the Nedbank Golf Challenge – the Mole recognised the scuff marks made by Sergio’s irons). A Flightscope was added to the mix to make sure we had the right shaft and club set-up in our hands.
That was followed a by a competition to win a trip in an Audi R8. Closest to the pin was the aim of the game and the Mole, who struggled under the pressure, blocked all three of his shots! However, luckily for him his esteemed Editor, who is not known for his prowess from 100m out, managed to win the competition. And, seeing that he already owns three R8s, (yes, you guessed it, one in each colour)... he decided to give the trip to the Mole.
And if he thought it couldn’t get any better, a brand-spanking-new R9 driver was placed in the Mole’s hands as he jumped into the Audi for the trip home... *Sigh* All in a day’s work...
