Nike Golf has released images of its latest square-headed driver, the SQ MachSpeed. It’s a well known fact that square drivers sacrifice a little bit of distance for accuracy, but Nike claim to have fixed this problem by improving the aerodynamics.
Tom Stites, who is the director of product innovation at Nike, said, "The number one thing that makes the ball go farther is faster ball speed. We've accomplished that through looking at the orientation of aerodynamics throughout the total golf swing, not just a portion of the swing."
He used the the simile of a parachute, “The wider the parachute is, the slower it comes down because air separates around the parachute and causes drag. The same thing applies to the golf club.”
The driver will also include Nike’s Str8-Fit system. It’s hitting stores in America in March, so don’t expect it here before then!
The Mole had a square driver once and it didn’t last in the bag very long. Let’s hope that this is a better effort on the whole idea of square heads. The Mole really thought the gimmick would have faded away by now...
