The latest craze in golf in the US at the moment seems to be the Heavy Putter. And no, this is not the guy who walks on your line all the time... After signing the new and improved John Daly as their Staff Player, it’s no wonder they are causing quite a stir.
How it works?
The putter’s heavier weight distribution forces you to use muscles (that you apparently wouldn’t normally use) to stabilise yourself during the movement of the stroke, resulting in a more pendulum-like motion. The manufacturers have also moved the centre of gravity higher up the shaft, closer to your own centre of gravity, which apparently increases stability and reduces wrist action.
Weight is placed at “optimal points” over the length of the putter; for instance, they put a heavy weight in the top of the shaft near the grip, to produce the results described above.
The Mole’s take on this: my bag is heavy enough as it is, no need to add a putter that weighs more than three bricks to assist me with my stroke; isn’t that what your local PGA Pro is for? Then again, if you don’t have to carry your own bag... why not?
