Enough publicity, Ping lets the wedge thing go...

The Mole is not surprised that Ping has come to an agreement with the PGA to finally ban the controversial Eye2 wedges that have caused an enormous fuss surrounding the new groove rules. Even the self-proclaimed “king” of the short game, Phil Mickelson, had one of these wedges in his bag during 2010.

Hunter Mahan’s fetcher...

Hunter Mahan should be pretty happy that he brought his girlfriend with him to the Waste Management Phoenix Open (what a lovely name for the title sponsor). She was, in part, responsible for his victory... and no, the Mole is not talking about moral support!

What’s that?

The Mole happened to spot Padraig Harrington’s new putter while watching the golf this weekend and for the first time in a while the Mole hadn’t seen or heard of it before. So, what exactly is it?

TaylorMade prototype pops up at WGC

The likes of Jim Furyk, Charles Howell, Rory Sabbatini and Dustin Johnson have all been trying out TaylorMade’s new prototype hybrid which hasn’t hit production yet. In fact, it hasn’t even been named yet, despite featuring the Rescue branding that’s common to TaylorMade’s hybrids.

USGA meet with Ping... still no resolution

A meeting was held on Wednesday between the USGA and Ping regarding the controversies around the use of Ping Eye2 wedges on the Tour. The meeting only produced two boring press releases from both parties... nothing on taking the wedges out of play. What are the odds on that happening?

TaylorMade has announced the launch of the new Burner SuperLaunch irons. The clubs are designed for the “slower-swinging” player who produces a low ball-flight. The Mole was wondering, is this just a nice way to describe a hacker?

The Mole recently found out that Rory McIlroy had just swopped to the new Titleist MB irons. For the Mole, it doesn’t get much better than these clubs; they are the real deal muscle back iron, forged from 1025 carbon steel and finished off with superb chrome plating. If you are not hitting the ball out the middle of the club every time, then these clubs are not for you!

There is a bit of a catfight going on within the ranks of the PGA Tour regarding the sportsmanship of using the square-grooved Ping Eye2 wedges. The Mole reported last week that a couple of players were using the wedges which don’t conform to the current groove regulations but, because of an agreement between Ping and the USGA in 1990, they remain legal.

A few golfers at the Sony Open were playing Titleist’s new Pro V1 Tour-only ball. Titleist has, for the past five months, been making two extra versions of the legendary Pro V1 for use on the Tour. They are the Pro V1 Plus Spin and the Pro V1x Plus Trajectory.

The Mole has learnt over the weekend that John Daly and Dean Wilson are using classic Ping Eye2 wedges at the Sony Open, manufactured over 20 years ago. Why? They have square grooves instead of the new v-grooves. But isn’t that illegal?
