A ball is just a ball, right? Well, not really, as the Mole learnt a while back. It’s all about the use of different materials (polyurethanes, plastics... which the Mole will leave to the engineers) and combinations of layers (of different thicknesses).

The Mole found this rather interesting YouTube video of slow motion impact shots of a couple of irons, a driver and a putter. It's rather interesting – note how the ball doesn't roll off the putter face!
