In a strange turn of events, the Garden Route has “lost” three of its courses. They are Simola, The Links at Fancourt and Bramble Hill.
Simola’s greens were burnt by a combination of chemicals and fertilizers and are going to need to be redone (sound familiar? remember when this happened at Sun City?). Tests are currently under way to determine the cause of the reaction that resulted in the “tragic death”... Director of Golf at Simola Alistair Beaumont said, “We are going to make some positive changes during the closure by doing an upgrade of the course. Some tees will be raised, bunkers reshaped and we hope to be open by mid-July.” Fancourt is also facing some tough times. Word is out that Bramble Hill is being mothballed (Thank God! The Mole has always had a tough time on that course...). What does it mean? Basically, minimum mowing to keep the grass and course in shape, but not fit for play. The reason? Simple maths really; it costs some R6 million a year to maintain (to Fancourt standards), which would mean a minimum of 40 000 rounds a year need to be played. Bramble Hill just doesn’t get close to that. So forget the scare-mongering comments of global financial crises – that’s just crap. The Links in closed until September to undergo major renovation work. The Mole must be honest here and say that he is happy to hear this. The course (the last time he played it) was littered with Poa and kikuyu and just hasn’t got that look of perfection that made it so impressive when it first opened.

Bramble Hill
What a shame of an excuse to close the course. More than 700 member (2006 membership figures) are without a home course to play on. The George Golf Club has an restriction on new membership and Fancourt ( who brags about their involvement in the community) do not care a bit. What about all the inland golfers who enjoy a round of golf at the end of the year? Do I smell a rat regarding the original development proposal for The Links and Bramble HIll if one consider the present situation? Fancourt now has 3 "private" golf courses which is not readily excessible for the general public. Maybe a fourth is in the making and not really "moth balled"?

Lies
Bramble is the most rubbish excuse for a course in the western cape. I would rather have my eyes removed than play that excuse for a dog track!!!!

18th green. Shocker mate!
Great lay out, greens are way to severe for links golf.Nobody can recreate st andrews green contours, they tried at fan court and at kings barnes in scotland, complete disasters! Links greens are generally smaller and flat ,unless nature and the odd sheep have interfered over many many years. Real links greens on a fake links might work.
