Padraig’s 830-metre par three – watch the video!

The world’s longest and highest par three, the signature hole at Legends Golf and Safari Resort, has its tee box poised at a dizzying height atop of Hanglip Mountain, 1 410 feet above the green and is only accessible by helicopter!

This means that the ball needs to travel an incredible 830 metres from tee to green (the total distance across and down)!

Still, Padraig became the first-ever golfer to make par on this amazing hole in a playoff against Raphaël Jacquelin.

Balls hit off the tee are estimated to have a 'hang time' of 26 seconds, so a little help is needed in keeping an eye on the white dimpled orb. With technology in the form of four separate cameras and tracking equipment, Padraig and Raphaël were able to track their tee shots and the flight of their balls, while ball watchers stood ready to point out where the balls had landed on the ‘map of Africa’ green.

Your average thrill-seeking golfer can play this bizarre hole in addition to a round of 18 holes, or as an experience on its own, and a hole-in-one will earn you one million US dollars!

Raphael and Padraig may not have posted holes-in-one, but they are two of 18 well-known golfers who have each designed one of the course's signature holes. Trevor Immelman, Bernard Langer, Colin Montgomerie, Justin Rose, Vijay Singh, K J Choi and Retief Goosen have each designed a hole at Legends.

Legends Golf and Safari Resort was just one of the stands on display at the 2009 PGA Golf Show held last weekend at Country Club Johannesburg. Isn't as long as it sounds
On the score card it might say it is 900 yards, but it doesn't play that long. On average PGA golfers hit their drivers roughly 300 yards ( average ). Elevation is the major factor.

falling speed
The skydiver doesn't hit the ground at the same speed at which he jumped out of the plane, even though his weight stays exactly the same (unless he wet his pants on the way down). Why? Simply because a radical change in aerodynamics took place once he pulled the string. In this case weight or density had nothing to do with the difference in speed, but simply air resistance.

My geometry is a bit rusty,, but what is the distance from the base of the cliff to the center of the green?? It has got to be in the 600 yard range,, Even with the elevated tee up on the cliff,, it would take a 600 plus yard drive to reach the Green?? Can anyone 'splain?? T.U.,, Jim J. in Suttons Bay

Otherwise the ball travels a total of 900 yards, it isn't 900 yards "long". Looks like those guys were playing 3 or 5 woods so I would say it plays from 235-275 yards

You idiots and taxes!Obama is considering not extending the "BUSH tax-breaks" which went into effect shortly after 9/11.The reality**tax rates would rise from 3***or**from *36 to *39 for income over 250K. For someone making 350K that's an additional 3k in taxes. 450k an additional 6Kand so on. If tax breaks are so necessary for a recovery, how come they preceeded the present disaster.For someone making 750K a year to complain about an 15K in taxes a year is absurd. The Clinton administration made substantial errors as well, no question about it. He should take his lumps on bin Laden as well as Bush. What really infuriates me about Clinton is that his decision making capacity was clouded by his in-office peccadilloes. As I recall, he avoided some actions against bin Laden because he was afraid of being accused of trying to "divert" attention away from his scandals. That said, I just don't accept the conservative line that Bush has kept us safe. He has done quite the opposite, imho, for reasons already stated and a whole lot more.

OFF TOPCIC: One of the biggest myths of George Bush is that he kept us safe. His apologists always count from 9-11, conveniently forgetting the fact that his administration was warned about Bin Laden. His administration demonstrated little interest in the radical Muslim threat until 9-11. How can I make this clear: he and his administration ignored warnings from multiple sources, basically laughing them off. And what did he do after 9-11? He followed Bin Laden's plan for 9-11 and got us embroiled in mid-east war, instead of doing the smart thing, launching an all out limited strike in Afghanistan and Western Pakistan. (After the attack we had the sympathy of the world to be able to pull this off.) Even Bin Laden was surprised when Bush & Cheney attacked Iraq. But Bin Laden took good advantage of Bush and Cheney's profound foreign policy misadventure. Iraq became a great training ground for Al Qaeda as well as a great recruiting tool. And now a former secular country, with a bad leader (one of many in this world), has become a fundamentalist Islamic state at the cost of 4000 young American lives and a trillion dollars. Christians are leaving the country in by the thousands to escape persecution, and close to a million have been purged from their homes. Meanwhile, the radical Muslim nuts who attacked us remain basically alive and well in the hills of Western Pakistan. The Taliban gains more and more control of Afghanistan. Way to go Bush/Cheny, mission accomplished - for Bin Laden. What a frickin' joke that whole crew was.

I am a physician. I make a good living. I play golf, sometimes, even in high priced resorts. And I am an Obama supporter. Come to think of it, I think I saw news reports of Obama playing golf. In Hawaii no less. (Maybe he was just sizing up the course for a housing project.) This whole business of Obama support as the equivalent of anti-golf is a dumb strawman argument. For every "elite" golf club, there are dozens of public courses or semi-private courses where one can go and play golf, spend 4 hours outside, challenging oneself, walking, enjoying comraderie with fellow golfers for about the same price of a dinner and a movie. And as far as the anti-"elistists" out there are concerned: The richest golfer in the world today grew up in modest household (retired military), learned to play golf in his garage and on public courses. For the "elitist" and "trvial" police, where does it end? Movies are trivial, lets get rid of them. Any mountain biker who spends $2600 dollars on a top of the line Specialized ** trivial and elitist. You have 2 kids, and live in a 3 bedroom house. How elitist. You should live in a one bedroom house. The kids can sleep in the living room. Thing of all the energy you'll save. Oh yes, maybe we need to go through the entire gamut of human activity and decide what is trivial and unnecessary and what is not. That's the ticket!

26 seconds is about right
According to the website 'Hyperphysics' the terminal velocity of a golf ball is only about 50 feet per second (yes, less than for a skydiver). Using 2 reasonable assumptions and basic kinematics I estimate a total time to impact of 30.5 seconds. The first assumption is the ball gains 20 feet of altitude from the initial stroke; the second assumption is that it reaches its terminal with no other factors involved. The initial rise of 20 feet takes the ball 1.1 seconds. Then the ball starts downward and achieves terminal velocity in about 1.6 seconds. During this 1.6 seconds it drops about 40 feet. So it starts at 1410, climbs to 1430, then drops to 1390 at which point it is at terminal velocity. It then takes 27.8 seconds to fall the rest of the way. Total flight time would be 30.5 seconds.It's surprising that the terminal velocity of a golf ball is so low (50 fps), but the website 'Hyperphysics' is very trustworthy, so if it says 50 fps, that's probably right.

terminal velocity
Must not be any engineers posting yet, so I'll take a crack. Terminal velocity is the speed at which a falling object stops accelerating when dropped from rest. Or, simply put, when the force due to gravity is equal to the force due to aerodynamic drag. You can factor in buoyancy too, which is kind of a pain... Anyway, according to my calculations, a golf ball's terminal velocity is ~81 mph. Density is a factor, but more importantly, a objects size, shape, and mass will be the determining factors in its terminal velocity.

More on physics
A golf ball's terminal velocity would be less than that of a human, not more. Leaving aerodynamics out of it (by that, I mean how the shape of the object affects its drag), density is pretty much the only factor determining which objects fall faster than others. Even if you consider aerodynamics, the difference between golf ball and human is really negligible compared to density. So yea anyway, 26 seconds doesn't sound far-fethed at all, considering the first few seconds are lift. (I hope that nobody really thinks that all objects in air fall at the exact same speed)

For the elite?
Let's get rid of the golf course. And fire everyone who works there: the maintenance people, the cooks, the groundskeepers, the caddies, the security people, the engineers, the waiters, the housekeepers, the janitors, and all the other employees. Yeah, that's the ticket. I'm sure everyone who is employed at the club will be glad all those elite golfers are outta there! And all those who benefit from the charitable events that are usually associated with tournaments and the Tour - I'm sure they will just as thrilled to see the club bulldozed.

Kyle, no, not a piece of paper due to air resistance), but on a relatively windless day I would say that YES, a regular golf ball and a 500 pound golf ball would fall at the same rate of speed. And in a vacuum a 500 pound golf ball and a feather would fall at the same rate of speed. Bottom line is the relationship between the force of pull and the object's inertial compensates exactly so that all objects fall at the same rate.

Backward engineering
My guess is this hole is an exercise in reverse engineering. Professional golfers drive around 280 to 320. By figuring out the physics, they could figure out where to put the green so the average pro could hit it with the driver. The green looks to be at 40 - 60 yards long.....

26 seconds?
The claim that the ball has 26 seconds of "hang time" defies physics. A skydiver falls the first 1000 feet in about 10 seconds and after that reaches terminal velocity of 1000 feet every 4-5 seconds. A golf ball would fall more quickly due to its more streamlined profile. But I'll spot you the difference and use the falling skydiver's wind resistance. Assuming that a towering drive hit by Tiger Woods, for instance, takes about 2.5 seconds to reach an apogee 600 feet higher than the tee.(I'm being very generous! I don't think for a minute that any player, even Woods, could hit a shot that high.) And adding that to the 1,410 foot tee elevation, the golf ball would hit the green about fourteen seconds after apogee and no more than 16 or 17 seconds after launch.I'm thinking that on average the hang time is more likely a bit less than 10 seconds, and probably no more than 12 seconds.

The black tee for the last hole at the Four Seasons in Nevis is a 250 yard carry across a gorge. Most high handicappers cannot make it. As a 8, I did it but barely.

OK fellahs....I was told from a Golf tour coordinator who sets up tours around the world that Padraig was the 1st person to par this hole, and since then, it has been done by a few others. The director also told me to save up a house payment to play the hole, and it is the "playoff" hole, not included in your regular $380 USD round of golf, but can be "had" for a price.Quite the accomplishment CG NSM!Dean in IL.

The Experience at Koele's 8th
On my last trip to Maui, I had one of those amazing days. I took a high speed hydrofoil from Lahina harbor across to Lanai watching wales on the way. The deal was $177 (many years ago) and included the boat, lunch and the round of golf on the only Bentgrass greens in Hawaii at the time. The course is the Experience at Koele. It was designed by the notable Greg Norman and fairway architect Ted RobinsonThe eighth hole is Koele's signature. Called the most spectacular in Hawaii it is a 396 yard, par 4 with a 250 foot elevation drop through ravines wooded with pine, koa, and eucalyptus. It is a very odd feeling trying to line up even a fairway from 250' up, I can't imagine this par 3. I hit driver well but it seemed lame as it went out normally and then just fell, and fell, and fell after it lost forward momentum. I was in the first cut just off the right side 151 out. Hit a 8 iron on and two putted. Really cool hole, the entire "experience" is highly recommended.
