The Mole chills with the Bear...

On Saturday Jack Nicklaus played the first ceremonial round on his Signature Design at Serengeti Golf & Wildlife Estate, and guess what, the Mole was there to have breakfast with him!

Jack spoke to the Mole about how the course was once a very large, very flat maize field – a similar story to that of The Links at Fancourt, except The Links was once an airfield – and how they had to dig the holes "down" to create an amphitheatre effect, which works very nicely out on the course.

The really neat thing about Serengeti is the grass; the developers have planted cool-season grasses, with rye on the fairways and bent greens creating a majestic bright green setting, which looks spectacular in Johannesburg (especially in winter).

Over breakfast Jack went on to discuss how he has got a few more projects in the pipeline in South Africa, which have already been approved, but unfortunately the current economic climate is putting a huge dampening effect on new developments at the moment.

After breakfast, Jack headed onto the course where he was followed by around 400 people. And in case you’re wondering, the legend can still play. His putting was just plain unbelievable. The course was in impressive condition, considering how young it is – even the tees were running at eight on the stimp, apparently!

Surprisingly Jack wasn’t too interested in the US Open that was going through yet another rain delay at the time. He says he doesn’t watch much golf anymore and seemed far happier being in South Africa working on his designs than stuck at yet another tournament in the US. Head in the sand, hoping that Tiger won’t eclipse his record too soon, perhaps?
