Glacier by Sanlam CEO Anton Raath today announced that, following three successful years of sponsoring South Africa’s premier amateur championship, the company has decided to refocus its golf support to junior golf, announcing the launch of the Glacier Junior Series.
The Mole is not surprised that Ping has come to an agreement with the PGA to finally ban the controversial Eye2 wedges that have caused an enormous fuss surrounding the new groove rules. Even the self-proclaimed “king” of the short game, Phil Mickelson, had one of these wedges in his bag during 2010.
The Mole is really disappointed to report that Darren Fichardt is not going to be able to play in the WGC CA Championship, even though he finished third on the the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit last year. This should have been enough to get him into the event.
The very experienced KJ Choi was beaten on the last hole of the Malayasian Open today by Noh Seung-yul, an 18-year-old South Korean, who made a birdie on the last hole to win by one! Choi had also birdied the 18th earlier in the day, and was the club house leader. Unfortunately for him, it was not enough to stop Seung-yul from taking his second Asian Tour title.
A caddie that read the lines superbly, a lucky pair of trousers, a great tip from Dean O’Riley, a red-hot putter and bit of luck on his side. These were the things England’s Laurie Canter mentioned when he accepted the 108th Glacier SA Amateur Championship trophy after his 6 & 5 victory over Allen Versfeld on Friday.
The Mole is pleased to report that South African golfers will no longer have to worry about handicap allowances as of 1 April 2010 as the SAGA has decided to discontinue it.
Jack Nicklaus has come out saying that he thinks Tiger Woods will play in the Masters next month. Nicklaus said that it would surprise him if Woods didn’t return to Augusta, a venue for four of his Major victories.
Ernie Els is set to receive the Golf Writers Association of America's Charlie Bartlett Award. The South African Major winner has committed a large portion of his life to charitable endeavours, such as his own foundation for aspiring underprivileged golfers as well as the Els for Autism Foundation.
Hunter Mahan should be pretty happy that he brought his girlfriend with him to the Waste Management Phoenix Open (what a lovely name for the title sponsor). She was, in part, responsible for his victory... and no, the Mole is not talking about moral support!
