The LET returns to Austria for the UNIQA Ladies Golf Open, played at Golfclub Fohrenwald, Wiener Neustadt from 2 – 4 September 2011.

This course features wide-open fairways which could benefit the longer hitters, like Laura Davies who is longer than most having ranked 13th in driving distance last season. Despite driving accuracy being easier to come by however, there are always many other factors which come into play.

This tournament is a fairly low scoring event, with the top 30 players all finishing under par last year, yet is no birdie feast. The lowest individual round last year was a 65 by Laura Davies in the second round (her only round under 70) while of all the rounds played by the top ten finishers only 50% were under 70.

Laura Davies, who won this event with an 11 under par total last year for her third victory here, has a phenomenal record in this event. Prior to this year the event has been played only 6 times, with Davies recording 3 wins, two second places (including a playoff loss in 2009) and a third place.

Davies has not been playing well this year however and will have her work cut out to maintain that record.

In the 2010 event there were 5 South African entries, with only Laurette Maritz missing the cut after a disappointing second round. The cut is made at the top 50 players and ties after two rounds.

Top South African finisher in 2010 was Lee-Anne Pace in a tie for 15th, with Tandi Cuningham finishing level par tied 31st and Morgana Robbertze a shot further back tied for 35th spot. Stacy Bregman made the cut but a closing 76 saw her finish downfield.

Robbertze misses the event this year, while Ashleigh Simon and the promising rookie, Connie Chen bring the South African entries up to a total of six for the 2011 event.

First Round Starting Times

Lee-Anne Pace and Ashleigh Simon have been drawn to play together with Caroline Masson of Germany, and begin their round off the 10th at 08:40 (Austrian Time)

Connie Chen also starts from the 10th, at 09:00 playing with Lisa Hall of England and Jaclyn Sweeney of the USA.

Tandi Cunningham goes off the first at 09:30 alongside Lynn Kenny of Scotland and Emma Cabrero-Bello of Spain.

Stacy Bregman goes off the 10th at the same time, playing with Elisabeth Esterl of Germany and local girl Natascha Grossschadl-Fink,

Final South African player is Laurette Maritz, drawn to play with Rachell Bell of Engand and Garrett Phillips of the USA. They are due to follow Tandi off the first tee at 09:40.

The Ladies European Tour has been a bit of a stop-start affair so far in 2011, but this event represents the first of a run of three events in three weeks before the Solheim Cup.

As always I join the rest of the South African fans in wishing our local players every success, and will post scoring updates whenever possible on my Facebook profile.

Remember that live scoring is available on the website
