This weekend’s golf proved to the Mole that there is one golfer out there who is, far and away, the best in the world at the moment. Who do you think it is? (tip: it’s not Tiger Woods)

It is Yani Tseng.

In my opinion there isn’t even a contest. At the Women’s British Open this weekend she won the fifth Major of her career, and she is just 22 years old.

Even if Rory McIlroy wins all the Majors before his 23rd birthday, he will not be able to achieve what she already has.

There definitely isn’t another female that could lay a better claim than Yani Tseng, she is the No 1 ranked woman in the world and has won four tournaments and two Majors already this year.

The other feather in Tseng’s cap that leads to a certain amount of bias from the Mole is the fact that she has a South African coach; Gary Gilchrist.

But what about the male contenders?

Tiger Woods might not even be in the world’s top 50 by the end of this year, so it’s definitely not him, but I like to mention his name because it stirs people up.

Current world No 1 Luke Donald has a decent claim to the throne but has never won a Major, which is huge concern to purists, and in this case I think they are right: Yani Tseng’s world No 1 ranking and two Major titles in 2011 easily trumps Luke Donald’s world No 1, and one World Golf Championship crown.

Then there is male golf’s young superstar, their own Yani Tseng if you will; Rory McIlroy. He proved to everyone what a real talent he is when he ran away with the US Open[link] earlier this year. But by his own admission he can’t play in the wind and hasn’t been able to put in a decent showing at a tournament since the US Open, whereas Tseng can’t stop winning.

Yani Tseng is without a shadow of a doubt – in the Mole’s mind at least – the best golfer in the world right now. Do you agree?
