Tiger fired Williams because he caddied for Scott

In the wake of Adam Scott’s first win with him on the bag, Steve Williams has revealed exactly why Tiger Woods fired him.

It was the most published split in golf since Tiger and Elin got a divorce, and it seems we weren’t told the whole story.

Williams took exception to the notion that he was fired face-to-face.

“That’s incorrect,” Williams said after he had helped Adam Scott win the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. “He told me over the phone. He said we were taking a break. In caddie lingo, that means I was fired.”

Williams did admit that he met Woods a few days after the fact, “but only so he could explain why I was fired.”

And then the big question everyone wanted to know, why was he fired?

“Because I worked for Scotty,” Williams said. “Plain and simple.”

The story behind Woods sacking Williams

When Woods re-injured his knee and Achilles tendon in the Masters, it left Williams twiddling his thumbs waiting for Woods to recover. Then Williams, thinking Woods was going to be playing the US Open, flew into the State from New Zealand only to discover Woods had withdrawn.

Obviously that unsettled Williams a bit, firstly because Woods hadn’t bothered to tell him before he told the press and secondly because he was now in America without a bag to carry.

That’s when Scott came along and asked Williams to caddie for him in the US Open. Woods sent a text message saying that it was ok, but then, according to Williams, tried to block the union later.

But Williams had already committed to Scott and wasn’t going to leave him in the lurch, and it was all downhill from there.

Definitely not a mutual agreement

When the most successful partnership in golf split, we were told it was amicable and a mutual decision, but the subsequent events have proved those initial statements false and things are starting to get ugly.

Williams didn’t hold any punches after he and Scott won the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational either.

“This is the most satisfying win ever,” Williams said. “I’m not denying that.”

"I've been caddying for 33 years, 145 wins, and that's the best week of my life," Williams said.

Scott apparently tried to enlist Williams' services before the US Open for the Colonial tournament, “but Steve had already flown back to New Zealand.”

And said that Williams’ availability at the US Open was, “fortunate for me.”

Williams' new popularity with crowd

Williams has also been enjoying his elevated standing with galleries since his split from Woods. He has even become a bit of a crowd favourite with chants of, ‘Ste-vie Wil-liams . . . Ste-vie Wil-liams . . . Ste-vie Wil-liams,’ following him around the course.

Which I’m sure is a welcome change to his reputation as a bully when he was with Tiger.

“The people here have been astounding. This has been the greatest week of my life as a caddie,” Williams said.

Scott laughed when he was asked if he had ever heard a crowd cheer for a caddie before and joked, “I had no idea how popular a New Zealander can be,” Scott said. “They appreciate him a lot, I guess.”

Tiger, Tiger, Tiger. I think only the Americans can still like him. He has become a disgrace as a husband and father, and now this. It’s just one totally selfish actafter another. When does Tiger realise he is not the only personin the world?
I now strongly believe his family is better of without him. He would only teach the kids to be selfishness and sulking human beings.

Golf is at pro level 90% a mental game. And a Caddy will make a HUGE difference.Especially if he knowsa course as well as Williams.Adam Scott is a phenominal golfer but why doesnt he win as often as expected and all the time? He is as good as anyone else and maybe better than most. So what makes a player win? Self belief and mental toughness. Thats where surroundings, circumstancesand whats programmed into a golfers mind comes in. All of them can hit the ball well.Even Tiger was exceptionally good on the driving range. Until he got to the course. So the player will only hit the ball well and better than the rest, when he is programmed better. And for ther reason. So a Caddy WILL make a HUGE difference. A player will hardly ever do it by himself. Why does so many pros drop out? Because of whats happening around them.

Well Paul ‘disreputable’ relates to the inner being and just to keep you swinging,’puting’ the ball in the hole is not done by the caddie , (SoI put my finger on the wrong keys picky, picky). Let us wait until they have put the wins on the charts and make that final judgement..

I hope you play golf better than you write. Like Paulrimbault pointed outthere are a number of words i’ve never heard of. Just as the player can choose his caddie so can a caddie choose his player. Yes Williams made money out of Wood’s bag, he does not have to follow him to the grave.

I have always thought Tiger a brilliant golfer and a loser as a human being, a view which Tiger continually reinforces!Tiger has not played very much golf since his life fell apart when his extramarital affairs came to light. Yet Steve Williams stood by him as his employer of 13 years.

Tiger allows Williams to fly half way around the world to carry for him when he is not playing. That is pure “Tiger class”.He gets upset when Williams carries for Scott and fires him – does Woods forget that while HE may have all the money in the world – well half, seeing as his ex now has the other half – and is being paid by sponsors for sitting at home, Williams still needs to earn an income?What this says to me (besides the fact that Tiger is no better than I thought he was) is that Tiger is SCARED !! Tiger realises that he is NEVER again going to dominate as he once did, and in his usual sulky, petulant manner is simply being vindictive.

In the end it’s the golfer who must lut the ball in the cup, and for a caddie who after winning a fortune with his prrevious boss openly disses him on live T.V shows poorjudgement. This is not the first time Williams has once again shown his true egotistical prattle. We shall wait and see if in fact Adam Scott does win as many as Tiger then we’ll make a decision.
