Oosthuizen grabs share of Houston Open lead

South African Louis Oosthuizen shared the clubhouse lead as darkness stopped play on the second day of the weather-affect Houston Open.

Seventy players still need to finish their second rounds early on Saturday as a result of thunderstorms on Thursday.

England’s Brian Davis and Oosthuizen were safely in the clubhouse on 11-under par when darkness fell.

Oosthuizen added a second-round 66 to his opening 67 to earn his share of the lead.

Jeff Maggert is threatening the top of the leaderboard on 10-under with eight holes left of his second round.

Defending champion Phil Mickelson shot a second-round 70 to head a group in the clubhouse on 9 under with JB Holmes, Tommy ‘Two Gloves’ Gainey, and England’s Greg Owen.

Three-time major champion Ernie Els, who needs a victory to book a berth at the Masters next week, carded a second-round 69 to sit six shots off the lead.

Oosthuizen is again using the driver he used to win the Open in 2010 and has rediscovered his form.

“I hit it well at the Open in 2010, and I feel like I’m very close to hitting it like I did there,” Oosthuizen said. “Swing-wise, I feel confident.”

Brendon de Jonge was another one of the lucky few to complete his second round and shot a 2-under 70 for a 4 under total.

Charl Schwartzel has also finished both rounds and is in a precarious position on 1 under, one shot above the cut line of 2 under.
