Off the tee: Driving Consistently

Key:

The key to mastering bigger and straighter drives is a balance of two components – clubhead speed and solid impact with the ball.

If you can imagine Mike Tyson delivering a knockout punch to his opponent, he is directing all of his power at his target.

Translated into golf, we are getting our clubheads to travel at 200kph and contacting 95 percent of the ball.

Here is how to channel that speed to maximise distance off the tee:

  • Lay down two clubs on either side of the teed-up ball. They should be slightly wider than the width of your driver head.

  • Hover your driver off the ground for a smoother takeaway.

  • Focus on taking the club straight back through the two shafts.

  • Accelerate on the downswing and sweep the ball off the tee, pushing the clubhead and ball through the two shafts.

Practise this exercise on the driving range with five individual golf balls, making sure to increase your clubhead speed with each new ball. When you take this new distance technique on the course, you will find more distance off the tee with less effort.
