Inventor Phil!

For those skeptics (the Mole included) who doubted that the pros actually had any involvement in club or golf course design - it's humble pie time.

Check out the latest patent from Callaway, for a funky new hybrid design, with the name at the top of the inventors' list being none other than Philip A Mickelson.

The patent was granted on Tuesday but keen-eyed golfers will recognise the club as the prototype that Phil used to finish runner up at last year's US Open at Bethpage.

At the time, Mickelson commented, "This is a special club I actually made, taking the back part of the hybrid out so that I can open it way up and get through that thick rough."

It remains to be seen whether the club will be made available commercially.
