Dlamini goes wire-to-wire for Women’s Amateur SA Stroke Play title

Swaziland’s Nobuhle Dlamini added to her Women’s Amateur SA Match Play title she won in 2009, when she blasted the field away by 10 strokes at in the Sanlam Women’s Amateur SA Stroke Play Championship at Umhlali Country Club yesterday.

Dlamini started the final round with an eight shot advantage over Lumien Orton, and after a shaky 73, where she experienced a bit of a wobble midway through her round, the Tuks Golf Academy student came through tops.

“I am just completely overwhelmed at this moment,” said a smiling Dlamini, in her post-tournament speech. “This means so much to me. To lift this trophy after trying and coming close for three years, tells me I can really compete. I won the Sanlam SA Match Play in 2009, but this victory tells me I can play, really play.”

And play, she certainly has. She successfully defended her title as the University of Pretoria's Women's Club Champion by shooting a 36-hole total gross score of 125 (-19) at Centurion Country Club this February with further victories this year at the Eastern Cape Match Play and Stroke Play, the North West Stroke Play and KwaZulu-Natal Match Play. Dlamini now aims to complete the SA Amateur double by winning the Match Play in July.

Orton finished in third after a final-round 76 with Mpumalanga’s Izel Pieters leapfrogging her for second, while 17-year-old Lara Weinstein finished in fourth.

In the B-division, 12-year-old Chiara Contomathios from Edenvale came out victorious with a one-shot win over last year’s runner-up Namibian amateur, Wilna Bredenhahn.
