Tiger’s old caddie Steve Williams was in the winner’s circle for the eighth time at Firestone Country Club, but this time it was with Adam Scott and a bag full of Titleist equipment.
Williams was obviously a big factor in Scott’s win, but Adam’s shot execution and putting on the back nine was flawless and showed that he is as ready as ever to win his first major. Let’s look at his victorious golf equipment.
Titleist Driver
Long and straight for Adam
Adam is only ranked 46th on the PGA Tour for driving distance, but showed at the Bridgestone how long he can be with an average of 319.6 yards (292m) off the tee. He used a Titleist 910D3 9.5° Driver with a Graphite Design AD DI 8 shaft to hit these prodigious distances all week.
Scott had his driver set to A-1, which is the default standard setting on the Titleist 910 series. The heavier shaft allowed Scott to get more control on his shots.
Titleist Fairway wood
The tee box alternative
Adam carried a Titleist 910Fd 15° fairway wood with a Fujikura ROMBAX P95 shaft. This fairway wood has a deeper face than the normal Titleist 910F, and is more effective off the tee.
Scott had his set to D-3, which is 0.75° higher loft and 0.75° more upright than standard setting up for a high draw.
Titleist Hybrid
Firestone’s length and thick rough made easy
Scott carries a Titleist 910H 21° hybrid. He has the UST Proforce V2 104 shaft fitted and uses it in conjunction with his 3-iron, which is normally the same loft. The hybrid however, would be more effective from thick lies and as another option off the tee.
Titleist Irons
Adam relies on simple blades for workability
Scott uses the Titleist 710 MB irons (3-9) with FST KBS Tour shafts. Being as strong as he is, Adam likes to work the ball around the course and therefore prefers blade irons as he is also a pure ball-striker and doesn’t need any forgiveness that a cavity-back iron would offer.
Titleist wedges
Less is more for a variety of shots
Adam only carries three wedges in his bag with one of them being a Titleist Vokey Design 200 Series 48° PW. The other two are also 200 Series wedges in 54° and 60° lofts. All three have the same FST KBS Tour shafts that he uses in his irons.
Being a player who likes working the ball, Scott doesn’t need as many wedges, and didn’t need to use them much anyway during the tournament, as his iron-play was just fantastic all week.
Scotty Cameron Putter
A well-earned victory for the long putter
Adam is one of very few players to use a long putter and has taken quite a bit of slack for it. However, Scott silenced any critics last week when he was almost seven shots better than the rest of the field in putting. He uses a Scotty Cameron Studio Select Kombi long putter and is certainly the right player to watch when it comes to the right technique with a long putter.
Titleist Pro V1
99 wins and counting
Adam is one of the few professionals who use the softer Titleist Pro V1 ball as opposed to the Pro V1X. He prefers the control around the greens, as he does not struggle for distance off the tee in any case.
This week is the final Major of the year on a long course, which will be played in some serious hot conditions. Who is your pick for the PGA Championship?
