Following on from our highly successful inaugural reader offer weekend in George at the beginning of September 2011, we are delighted to offer you yet another stunning value-for-money weekend in April 2012 in the heart of the famous Stellenbosch wine-growing region. This is an ideal opportunity to come away with your regular golfing buddies on your annual golf trip at a fraction of what you normally spend! In George, several of our golfing readers brought their non-golfing other halves with them and they enjoyed the getaway weekend too, so please don’t think our Winelands Weekend is just for golfers.

Golfing in the Winelands of the Western Cape has become a regular addition to almost all tour groups passing through the region. After all, there is something extremely relaxing and satisfying about being able to amble along fairways that are flanked by the Boland mountains, with hills and valleys covered in vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see. And then there’s the majestic Table Mountain – one of the new seven natural wonders of the world – adding to the view.
With eight magnificent golf courses to choose from, all within a leisurely hour’s drive of each other, you are really spoilt for choice. And three of these layouts have all played host to some big events that have brought the entire world’s attention to the region.
Stellenbosch golf club
One of the oldest golf clubs in South Africa, Stellenbosch, already over 100 years old, was originally a nine-hole layout but, in 1953, it became the 18-hole, par-72 parkland layout that has hosted many prestigious amateur and professional tournaments including the South African Open and the South African Masters.
De Zalze golf club
The De Zalze golf course, situated within the De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate, was designed by Peter Matkovich (who also designed Cotswold Downs, Arabella and
Pinnacle Point among others). Matkovich made the most of the idyllic setting and created a course that places a premium on accuracy.
The course has an excellent mix of parkland holes, with its main challenge presented in the form of the water features on several holes, as well as the oak-tree-lined
Blaauwklippen River, which winds its way through the estate and comes into play at various intervals. De Zalze hosted the World Amateur Team Championships (Eisenhower and Espirito Santo trophies) as well as the largest-ever SA Amateur Championships in 2006.
Erinvale golf club
This Gary Player-designed 18-hole championship golf course was opened in 1995 and was the first golf estate in the Cape Town area. Erinvale hosted the 1996 World Cup of Golf, in which 32 participating nations competed. Everyone playing Erinvale finds the layout a golfing challenge as well as a visual delight. Trevor Immelman learned his golf here and won the South African Open both times Erinvale hosted the famous championship.
Waterford Estate
Kevin Arnold, cellar master of
Waterford estate and chocolatier Richard von Geusau have collaborated to create a series of dark and milk chocolates that, when paired with the Waterford Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and sweet dessert wines, provide you with a sensational tasting experience.
