The TaylorMade R11 driver made it two victories in two weeks with Sean O’Hair’s win at the RBC Canadian Open, on a course that proved to be even tougher than the week before at Royal St George’s.
Shaughnessy Golf Club was playing long and narrow with extremely thick rough, but O’Hair kept it together all four days and eventually sealed victory by being the most consistent and even having the best scoring average. Let’s look at his golf clubs to see what he used to tame such a beast of a course.
TaylorMade driver
O’Hair’s long and accurate bomber off the tee
Sean has also been using the TaylorMade R11 9° since it was launched and last week combined it with a Matrix Ozik HD7 shaft. He has been sitting rather far down the driving distance stats on the PGA Tour this year but showed his hitting prowess yesterday with an average of 319 yards (approximately 290m) off the tee.
The Matrix Ozik shaft is a heavier shaft, which is designed to keep the ball lower through the air. You can actually watch O’Hair’s initial TaylorMade R11 fitting by clicking here.
TaylorMade fairway wood
Older technology still perfect for Sean
O’Hair is still using the original TaylorMade Burner TP 15° fairway wood, which was introduced in 2007 and had the red stripes on the bottom. He has a Mitsubishi Rayon Diamana White board 83X shaft in it. He also carries a 17.5° TaylorMade R7 TP fairway wood with a Mitsubishi Rayon Fubuki 83X shaft, which is also an older model but, like the Burner TP, is still used by quite a few tour professionals.
TaylorMade hybrid
O’Hair’s rescue remedy when the going got ‘rough’
Sean had a TaylorMade Rescue TP 21° hybrid with a Mitsubishi Rayon Fubuki AXH 500 shaft in the bag. This is a direct replacement for his 3-iron and was perfect for hitting out of the thick rough in Canada. He was even able to get it to land softly and stop up fairly quickly even on the slippery greens.
TaylorMade golf irons
Workability from the fairway key to Sean’s success
O’Hair carries the TaylorMade Tour Preferred Forged MB golf irons with True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue shafts. These shafts are heavier than the normal Dynamic Gold’s and also promote a lower trajectory meaning that the player needs to have really pure ball striking to get the optimal spin control. Sean is one of those who has this ability and used the golf irons to manoeuvre his way around the narrow fairways in Canada.
TaylorMade wedges
Three wedges enough for Sean’s shotmaking ability
O’Hair used two TaylorMade TP xFT wedges with lofts of 52° and 60° to go with his PW which is included in the golf iron set. They also featured the True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue shafts, the same as in his golf irons. O’Hair only need the two wedges as he prides himself in shotmaking and can therefore open and close the face depending on the distance and trajectory he desires.
Check out his incredible wedge shot on the par-4 13th hole yesterday which he stuck just a couple of feet from the hole for birdie.
Scotty Cameron putter
Another win for Scotty Cameron in 2011
It is now quite obvious that Scotty Cameron is the most-used putter brand on the professional tour. Even as a TaylorMade staff professional, Sean, like Darren Clarke last week, used a Scotty Cameron for Titleist Studio Select Fastback putter, the same putter used by Nick Watney when he won the AT&T Classic a few weeks ago.
TaylorMade golf ball
Penta TP the best ball for O’Hair
Sean used the TaylorMade Penta TP golf ball. This is the only golf ball with five layers on the market and needless to say, the ball is incredible. O’Hair needed this technology to manipulate all of his shots as much as possible around the extremely tough course in Canada and in the end came out tops.
This weekend sees the PGA Tour players battle it out for the Greenbrier Classic, where Stuart Appleby blitzed the field in the final round with a 59. Are we going to see it again this year and who will be the top equipment brand there?
